Ionic and Covalent Bonds – Core Chemistry Concepts

Ionic bond

- Electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
- Also known as an electrovalent bond.
Sodium loses its one electron to chlorine. So that chlorine has a stable electronic configuration.

Covalent Bond

- Electrostatic attraction between the nuclei of 2 atoms and a shared pair of electrons.

- Types:

Single - Only 1 shared pair of electrons
Double - Only 2 shared pairs of electrons
Triple - Only 3 shared pairs of electrons
