Rest
- An object is said to be at rest when it does not move.
Motion
- An object is in motion when it changes its position with respect to time.
Types of Motion
1. Rectilinear Motion
- Object moves in a straight line.
- Examples: train, bullet fired from a gun.
2. Curvilinear Motion
- Object moves along a curved path.
- Examples: car turning, boy throwing a ball or stone.
3. Rotational Motion
- The object rotates around a fixed axis without changing its position.
- Examples: fan blades, Earth’s rotation.
4. Oscillatory Motion
- Object moves back and forth about a mean position.
- Examples: swing, pendulum.
5. Vibratory Motion
- Object vibrates rapidly in place.
- Examples: drums, guitar strings.
6. Periodic Motion
- Motion that repeats after fixed intervals.
- Examples: clock pendulum, heartbeat, Earth revolving around the Sun.
7. Non‑Periodic Motion
- Motion that does not repeat at regular intervals.
- Examples: storm, playing football.
8. Multiple Motion
- Combination of two or more types of motion.
- Examples: cycle (rotational + rectilinear), drilling machine.
9. Random Motion
- Object changes direction frequently and unpredictably.
- Examples: kite flying, flames in a fire.
10. Uniform Motion
- Object covers equal distances in equal intervals of time.
- Example: car moving at constant speed.
11. Non‑Uniform Motion
- Object covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time.
- Example: a car moving in traffic.
Insight:
Understanding the different types of motion helps explain how objects behave in everyday life, from the steady rhythm of a pendulum to the unpredictable flight of a kite.
