Additional Details and Safety Precautions for Paper 5 Physics ATP Question 1

 Additional Details and Safety Precautions

General Safety

- Use a sand tray or cushion to catch the mass in case it falls.

- Switch off the hot coil when not in use to avoid burns. Handle with gloves or avoid direct contact.

- Always wear safety goggles to protect eyes, especially when working with moving springs or falling loads.

- Perform experiments in a quiet room to minimise disturbances.

- Carry out work in a fume cupboard when toxic gases or vapours may be produced.

Apparatus Handling

- Use foil to cover the entire cross‑sectional area in use.

- Secure circuits and glassware with clamps for stability.

- Place a rule vertically and check alignment with a set‑square.

- Use fiducial markers to keep the starting point constant.

- Employ large measurements wherever possible to reduce percentage uncertainty.

- Clean the surfaces of planes to reduce friction.

Light and Optics

- Use a high‑intensity lamp for clear readings.

- Employ a filter or coloured LED to produce monochromatic light.

- For video analysis, playback frame by frame to track movement accurately.

Electrical and Electronic Precautions

- Ensure electrical wires to the LDR are waterproof when circuits are used underwater.

- Rotate the Hall probe until the maximum reading is obtained on the voltmeter.

- Avoid external magnetic fields when using a Hall probe.

- Use a signal generator to vary frequency in oscillation experiments.

- Determine the period of oscillation from a cathode ray oscilloscope as:

Period = one time division x time base

Measurement and Accuracy

- Clamp apparatus securely to prevent movement.

- Use top‑pan balances, metre rules, micrometre screw gauges, or vernier callipers appropriately for precise measurements.

- Always aim for consistent starting points and repeat measurements to improve reliability.
