Design Psychology: Principles for Effective Visuals

Cognitive Load

- Definition: Cognitive load is the measure of the mental effort required to process information.

- Application in Design:

  - A user-centred design reduces cognitive load.

  - This leads to a user‑friendly experience and increased engagement.

- Key Insight: The simpler and clearer the design, the easier it is for users to interact with it.

Rule of Thirds

- Definition: The rule of thirds divides an image into a grid of nine equal parts using two equally spaced horizontal and vertical lines.

- Application in Design:

  - Helps create balanced and engaging visuals.

  - Guides the viewer’s eyes naturally across the design.

  - Adds depth and harmony to compositions.

- Key Insight: Placing key elements along the grid lines or intersections enhances visual appeal.
