Fireworks were invented 2000 years ago. 90% of fireworks are still originated from China. In the 13th Century, the Arabs obtained knowledge of gunpowder. In the same century, firecrackers arrived in Europe with the campaigner. Fireworks are made using gunpowder, which consists of potassium nitrate, charcoal and sulphur. Earlier, the people enjoyed the sound more than the show. After many years, people discovered that the greater amounts of oxygen in chemical compounds made the fireworks brighter and stayed for a longer time. First, the fireworks were orange and white. New colours were made by adding different minerals. In the 1800s, fireworks developed into what we know today. Italy was the first country that experimented with pyrotechnics. Colourful displays were created in the 1830s.
