Strike March Riot - 23 Injured

23 August, 2022

Around forty-eight thousand seven hundred and twenty-nine women workers, employed in three units of Reliance and its vendors in Delhi district, went on strike on Saturday, 5th March. The strike lasted for five hours, from 5 pm to 10 pm, and was organized as a protest against the life sentence of some of the workers. During the strike, twenty-three women were injured by the police.

The women went on strike because they felt that they could not provide for their families alone and wanted financial support from their employers. They carried posters with handwritten slogans and protested continuously.

The workers even filed a case against Reliance. A judge heard both the company and the women in court. After the hearing, the matter was resolved, and the company agreed to compensate the workers and provide financial assistance to their families.

The public criticized the police for injuring the workers who were protesting for their families' rights.

The employees' union of the Municipal Corporation advised against immediately conceding to the employees' demands, fearing that it would encourage them to blackmail the management. Instead, they suggested talks and mutual understanding to resolve the matter.

The judge ordered both the staff and the manager to maintain a positive and healthy relationship. He also requested the employees not to go on strikes but to solve any problems mutually. He advised them to prioritize the organization's interests over their individual interests.
