In our society today, formal education, which is instruction carried out in formal institutions such as schools, is undoubtedly important in the development of young minds and hence, made compulsory in Singapore by the Ministry of Education (MOE). This ensures that all ae able to receive education and eventually go on to pursue the career of their choice. Thus, many feel that the main function of formal education is to enable people to gain employment. However, I feel that this is only one of the many functions of formal eduation and there are equally or even more important functions, such as the inculcating of moral values and the increasing of students' global awareness. Furthermore, another factor for consideration is education for employability - the capability of holding a job or staying employed, which depends greatly on a person's holistic development.
