Respiration and Photosynthesis: Complementary Processes

Energy Storage in Respiration

- The energy released during respiration is stored in the form of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate).
- ATP acts as the energy currency of the cell, powering all life processes.

Anaerobic Respiration

- Occurs in the absence of oxygen.
- Produces carbon dioxide, ethyl alcohol, and energy.
- Energy released is less.
- Glucose molecules are partially broken down.

Aerobic Respiration

- Occurs in the presence of oxygen.
- Produces carbon dioxide, water, and energy.
- Energy released is more.
- Glucose molecules are completely broken down.

Respiration vs Photosynthesis

These two processes are reverse yet complementary to each other:

Respiration

- Oxygen is taken in.
- Carbon dioxide is given out.
- Happens during the day and night (continuous process).
- Food (glucose) is broken down.
- Energy is released.
- Occurs in all plants.
- Light is not required.

Photosynthesis

- Oxygen is given out.
- Carbon dioxide is taken in.
- Happens during the daytime.
- Food (glucose) is produced.
- Energy is used (from sunlight).
- Occurs only in green plants.
- Light is essential.

Insight:

Respiration and photosynthesis form a natural cycle. Plants produce food and oxygen through photosynthesis, while respiration uses that food to release energy, maintaining balance in the ecosystem.
