Preparation for the board examination

The day before the crucial board examination, the atmosphere in Milind's home was charged with a mix of anxiety and determination. His father, Pradip, a steadying presence in Milind's life, leaned forward with a serious yet encouraging expression. “You need to start preparing for the Mathematics paper, Milind,” he urged. “If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to invite your friends over. Studying together can help you grasp the concepts better.” Milind’s mother chimed in, “If your friends already have the revision materials and answers, feel free to bring them home; otherwise, it would be more efficient to focus on reviewing what you already know.”

Taking her words to heart, Milind made a decision. He reached out to three close friends: Arya, Spruha, and Amee, inviting them to study at his house. Before long, the kitchen table was transformed into a makeshift study area, cluttered with geometry toolboxes, crumpled question papers, and rough sheets filled with calculations. The smell of freshly brewed tea mingled with the excitement and nervous energy of four young minds preparing for the challenges ahead.

Spruha quickly fished the revision paper on Bearings out of her bag, her brow furrowed with concentration. The friends dived into problem-solving, attempting each sum with determination. However, the weight of the more difficult problems hung over them like dark clouds, untouched and unresolved. After about an hour of focused effort, they shifted their attention to discussing the more perplexing questions on their paper. Amee, the group’s math whiz, illuminated their minds with her insights, expertly answering most of their queries. Still, some misunderstandings lingered, creating a palpable tension in the air. To resolve this, Amee grabbed a large piece of chart paper, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm as she began explaining each concept from the very beginning, guiding her friends through the complexities with patience and clarity.

Finally, exam day arrived. As Milind sat at his desk, pencil poised over the paper, an unsettling realisation gripped him: he had neglected to study the rules of trigonometry and the essential formulas for mensuration. The exam unfolded like an intricate puzzle, and he soon found himself grappling with questions that felt insurmountable, despite all his efforts with his friends the day before.

Upon returning home, a wave of disappointment crashed over Milind. He felt as if a heavy stone had settled in his stomach, making it difficult to shake off the feeling of regret. The thoughts spiralled through his mind, each one more critical than the last. “Spruha and Arya had so many lingering doubts about Bearings that we should have resolved earlier. Why didn’t we address those sooner?”

Frustrated, he reflected on how the dynamics of group study had hindered his progress. It stung to know that they had spent the entire day focused solely on Bearings within the trigonometry chapter. “If I had opted for self-study, I could have reviewed the entire subject systematically. I will never heed my dad's advice again regarding group study, and I’ll be more selective about inviting friends over for this purpose in the future. That was a piece of advice I should have ignored," he vowed silently to himself, the weight of his decision pressing heavily on his heart.
