Chemical Equations  

A chemical equation is a symbolic representation of a chemical change, expressed using symbols and formulas. It shows how reactants transform into products during a reaction.  

Law of Conservation of Matter  

Matter can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. This principle means the total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products. To reflect this, chemical equations must be balanced.  

Balancing Chemical Equations  

Balancing is the process of equalising the number of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation. An unbalanced equation, sometimes called a skeletal equation, does not obey the law of conservation of matter. A balanced equation ensures accuracy and consistency in representing chemical changes.  

Significance of a Balanced Chemical Equation  

Balanced equations are more than just neat representations; they provide vital information:  

- Reactants and Products: They indicate which substances take part in the reaction and what is formed.  

- Number of Molecules: They show the relative number of molecules or moles of reactants and products.  

- Quantitative Calculations: Balanced equations help calculate the exact quantities of substances formed or consumed, whether measured by mass or volume.

By balancing equations, chemists can predict outcomes, design experiments, and ensure that reactions follow natural laws. This practice is fundamental to laboratory work, industrial processes, and even everyday applications like combustion or cooking.
