Figures of Speech - Short Notes

Imagery

Describing something using words that appeal to our senses of smell, sight, taste, touch, or hearing. It helps the reader build a vivid mental picture and experience the situation more clearly.

Metaphor

A figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that is not literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison. Example: "Time is a thief."

Oxymoron

Two words that contradict each other, but appear together to create new meaning or rhetorical effect. Example: "Bittersweet" or "Deafening silence."

Hyperbole

A figure of speech that uses exaggeration as a device to express emotions or viewpoints more strongly. Example: "I’ve told you a million times."
