Disaster Safety - Fire Safety

Key Practices  

1. Housekeeping: Keep spaces clean and free of clutter to reduce fire hazards.  
2. Install Smoke Detectors: Ensure detectors are placed in key areas and tested regularly.  
3. Electrical Fire Safety: Avoid overloading sockets, replace damaged wires, and unplug unused appliances.  
4. Store Flammable Liquids Safely: Keep flammable and combustible materials in proper containers, away from heat sources.  
5. Fire Extinguishers: Keep accessible extinguishers at home/work and know how to use them.  
6. Family Escape Plan: Prepare and practice an evacuation plan with all household members.  
7. Candle Safety: Never leave candles unattended; keep them away from flammable items.  
8. Be Careful Cooking: Stay alert in the kitchen; never leave cooking unattended.  
9. Space Heater Safety: Place heaters away from flammable materials and turn them off when not in use.  
10. Emergency Preparedness: Know emergency numbers and keep exits clear.  
11. If You Catch Fire – Stop, Drop, Roll: Fall to the ground, cover your face, and roll until flames are out.  
12. If Caught in Smoke – Crawl Low: Stay close to the ground to avoid inhaling smoke.  
13. If Trapped in a Fire: Close doors, seal gaps with cloth, signal for help from a window.  
14. In Case of Fire: Stay calm, evacuate immediately, and call emergency services.
