Frequency Range of Sound

1. Humans can hear sound waves as distinct pitches only when the frequency lies between about 20 Hz and 20 kHz.  

2. Sound waves above 20 kHz are called ultrasound. These are not perceptible to humans.  

3. Sound waves below 20 Hz are called infrasound.
