English Grammar Notes - Relative Pronouns

What is a Relative Pronoun?  

- A relative pronoun refers back to a noun mentioned previously (person, place, thing, animal, or idea).  

- It is used to join two sentences together smoothly.  

Common Relative Pronouns  

- Who – refers to people (singular or plural).  

- Whom – refers to people, usually as the object of a verb or preposition.  

- Whose – shows possession.  

- Which – refers to animals or things.  

- That – can refer to people, animals, or things.  

Example Sentences  

- The teacher who explained the lesson was very clear.  

- The student whose book was lost borrowed mine.  

- The house which stands on the hill is very old.  

- The dog that barked loudly ran away.
