Design Visual Theory - Basic Elements Key Terms

Legibility: How easy to differentiate characters in upper and lower case.

Readability: How easy to read words or blocks of text.

Baseline: An imaginary line where the text rests.

Cap Height: Height of typeface capital letters measured from baseline.

x Height: Typeface height of lower case letters.

Ascenders: Upper part in certain letters that extend beyond cap height.

Descenders: Lower part in certain letters that extend beyond the baseline.

Weight: Thickness of font.

Tracking(Letter-spacing): Space between each letter in a word.

Kerning: Custom spacing between different letters.

Line Length (Leading): Number of characters per line of text.

Paragraph is 40 to 60 characters. Short lines are 20 to 40 characters.

Line Height: Vertical space between 2 baselines.

Paragraph spacing: Vertical space between paragraphs.
