Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen was born on July 16th, 1872 in Norway. He is known for being the first person to reach the South Pole. He also achieved many other firsts, such as being the first to complete a ship voyage through the Northwest Passage around the Northern Canadian Coast and the first to cross the Arctic by air. In 1903, he embarked on his voyage to sail through the Northwest Passage and reached Cape Colborne in August 1905. He and his crew resumed the journey in August 1906, which proved to be his last major achievement in polar exploration.
