Learning a language whether it's a foreign language or a computer language, is beneficial and can be facilitated with technology. It is widely believed that technology makes learning a language easier, expanding our ability to communicate with non-English speakers. Therefore, learning a foreign language is a must. With the help of such innovations, we can learn numerous languages.
Firstly, computer technology provides access to a vast array of resources such as online dictionaries, and grammar guides, and language learning platforms such as Duolingo, Babbel, and Rosetta Stone offer comprehensive and interactive learning experiences. These platforms use gaming techniques to engage learners, making the process enjoyable and motivating. The availability of multimedia resources, including videos, audio recordings, and interactive exercises, cater to different learning styles and helps reinforce language skills through varied and immersive content. As everyone is accustomed to technology and uses it regularly, we can learn a language by just sitting somewhere comfortably, meaning we don't waste our time and energy to reach any class. Online learning platforms such as Tandem, HelloTalk, and Albert Learning, conduct one-on-one sessions where we can communicate with native speakers around the world. Video-conferencing tools such as Zoom, Skype facilitate virtual language lessons with tutors, providing learners with the opportunity to receive immediate feedback and guidance. This direct interaction with native speakers enhances cultural understanding and helps learners develop practical language skills that are essential for real-world communication. Organizations like Cambridge provide articles regarding the Cambridge Examination for Foreign Languages on their website. These materials are very helpful and allow us to become fluent in any foreign language. Additionally, we can refer to videos and websites available online for better and deeper understanding. Tools such as Google Translator help us learn the pronunciation of letters and words by hearing them.
Moreover, computer technology enables personalized learning experiences. Adaptive learning algorithms analyze a learner's progress and tailor the content to their specific needs and pace. On the other hand, some difficulties arise when we plan to study online, such as health concerns. Not everyone can study online due to many distractions, which could be due to the area we are in or due to the notifications popping up on the technology. Approximately, 43 million people in America, do not have proper access to the internet. Additionally, people with disabilities cannot use the technology well. One of the biggest challenges of studying online is that without the physical presence of an instructor, learners lose the motivation for learning. The studying process can be disturbed when the speed of WiFi slows down, causing frustration to the mind. Sometimes, data on the internet is not reliable either.
Other reasons why offline learning is better, even though finding a teacher is a difficult task. When a pupil isn’t able to understand some point, then the teacher/sir can give real-life situations to explain themselves. They can guide us on the exact pronunciation and the accent specifically used for that language. Writing a foreign language is also essential, which can be only learned when we physically learn it. For example, Asian languages such as Chinese and Korean are quite difficult to learn from the internet, using a pen in hand, unless we are professional in it.
In conclusion, computer technology has undeniably made it much easier to learn another language by providing access to a wealth of resources, enabling personalized learning experiences, facilitating real-time communication with native speakers, offering flexibility and convenience and also promoting collaborative learning. Therefore, I feel that learning, not just a language but other subjects or hobbies, should be pursued in an online mode, where the learner is more comfortable and their minds are in a focussed manner.
