Adjectives – Types, Order & Usage

Types of Adjectives  

- Quality → describes nature/character.  
  - He ate a whole pizza.  
- Quantity → shows amount.  
  - There are a few students present in the class.  
- Number → shows exact count/order.  
  - There are 24 mangoes in the box.  
  - You finished the third bottle of juice. 
- Demonstrative → points out (this, that, these, those).  
  - This country is popular for tourism. 
- Interrogative → used in questions (which, what, whose).  
  - Which novel do you like among these?  

Examples  

- Yellow, dirty school bus → Quality + Colour.  

Order of Adjectives – OSASCOMP  

- O → Opinion (beautiful)  
- S → Size (big)  
- A → Age (old)  
- S → Shape (round)  
- C → Colour (red)  
- O → Origin (Italian)  
- M → Material (wooden)  
- P → Purpose (sleeping bag)  

Degrees of Comparison  

- Positive → This tree is tall.  
- Comparative (-er) → She is taller than me.  
- Superlative (-est) → Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world.  

Rules:  

- Ends with e → add -r/-st (brave → braver/bravest).  
- Ends with y → change to -ier/-iest (happy → happier/happiest).  
- Ends with consonant + short vowel → double consonant (big → bigger/biggest).  
- More than 2 syllables → use more/most (beautiful → more beautiful/most beautiful).  

Adjective Phrases  

- A crown made of gold → gold crown.  
- A tiger with white skin → white tiger.  
- A girl with green eyes → green‑eyed girl.
